“Jones can be stunning, effortlessly finding the right tone.”—The Village Voice

Richard Jones examines the details of daily life as though through a child’s eyes, taking in every wondrous moment as if time were nonexistent, yet with the intensely painful understanding that the elemental world of the family is fleeting. Jones, who is strongly influenced by Rilke and Keats, is a master of metaphor who can transform mundane things into sacred objects.

Richard Jones is the author of ten books of poetry and criticism and founding editor of the literary magazine Poetry East. He teaches at DePaul University in Chicago.

Richard Jones' 61 poems are filled with sharp observations, surprising turns and a few honest words about the reality of love.

There's a little bit of something here for poets and poetry readers of all types:

Etymology and language buffs - "OED" is a consideration beginning with the word `lucubrate' and running on from there. "Pulchritude" is a heartfelt look into the strange mind of a poet in love and "Affliction" shows how hyperbole follows the literarily inclined everywhere they go.

The grief-stricken - "Departed" is a solemn note on the reminders of Jones' father lurking in his daily life, in particular a silver tiepin. "The Face" a response to Emmett Till's mother speaking on the radio about her son, who was murdered in Mississippi at age 14 and became one of the driving points behind the civil rights movement.

Religious and/or spiritual - In "Re: incarnation," Jones speculates what he might like to come back as in his next life (including a Grad Prix winner and an undertaker's grave digging brother). Or, "Adam Praises Eve," wherein he praises his wife and everything about her from a vein above her ankle to the green of her eyes.

Experimental - The whole middle section of this book is made up of nine short poems, each based on a form of punctuation. Included are: &, ( ), !, ;, :, < >, /, -- and finally, [sic].

Romantic - In my favorite of the bunch, "Coffee with Cream and Sugar," Jones tells a small, sweet story about his wife bringing him coffee in bed, hoping that she might come back.

This book of poetry was a pleasure to read and touches on topics all over the place. If you're looking for a multi-faceted, interesting volume, I would definitely pick this up!

In “The Correct Spelling”, Jones starts with OED, seemingly an exploration of words beginning with “L” (Lucubrate, lactiferous, luff ..). But I think he shines, when he is puts down the dictionary, like in Affronts (“I’ve found graffiti on lonely walks / as profound and concise as poetry) or “”Write as if you were proclaiming/ from a pulpit”. Note also that “&” is a section of short, playful poems after punctuation symbols. I liked “[sic] … knowledge or the original error”. The poems of “Exact meaning” .. are touching to me.. “We’re taught by the seers / that the seeds of sorrow/ are sown in the moment/ of job;” The poems of his father or son are particularly touching and sincere.
Richard Jones, author of his most recent book of poems called The Correct Spelling & Exact Meaning, is a master of metaphor as he explores the familiar scenes of daily life with a lens of innocence, seizing every moment that passes him by. In poems such as "At Last" and "The Child Lost" this is especially true, his descriptions eliciting more emotion than seemingly capable of thirty-some lines on a single page.
The book explores an array of different styles of poems, the most intriguing of these in the section labeled "&." Here, Jones explores meaning of something as seemingly simplistic as a pair of parentheses or an exclamation mark.
A personal favorite, "At Last" tells heartwarming story of his nightly ritual with his three children as he helps them to get ready for bed. His poems have a way of helping us to keep in mind that we all have an expiration date, and we should look at every little moment that passes us by with conviction and admiration.
If you enjoy hearing a good story filled with rich description and meaning, I would definitely recommend this book!
